SYO Musicians
SYO musicians are given the opportunity to enrol in Orchestral Musicianship classes when accepting their weekly orchestral training program offer at the start of each year.
External Musicians
External Musicians are welcome to enrol in Orchestral Musicianship Essentials, Orchestral Music (1600-1900) and Orchestral Music (1900-Present) - No SYO membership required!
Not available for external musicians – SYO Membership required.
Mandatory for all SYO Strings Stage 1, 2 and 3.
Automatic enrollment with SYO Membership.
A 6-level introductory course to orchestral musicianship specifically designed to compliment the SYO Strings Program.
Available for external musicians – no SYO Membership required.
Optional for SYO Symphonic Orchestral Program Musicians
Perfect for high school music students aged 12-19 (Years 7-12).
The program focuses on:
- Musical notation
- Chords and harmony
- History of orchestral music
- Score reading and analysis
- Melodic and rhythmic dictation
- Sight-singing
Available for external musicians – no SYO Membership required.
Optional for SYO Symphonic Orchestral Program Musicians
Perfect preparation or extension add-on course for students aged 14-19 (Years 9-12).
Ideal for those intending to, or who are currently studying Music 2* and/or Music Extension.
The program focuses on:
- Score analysis
- Rhythmic and melodic dictation
- Sight-singing
- Key paradigms of the period
- Works of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms
- Emergence of the symphonic form
*Music (1600-1900) is a mandatory topic of HSC study for Year 11 Music 2.

Optional for SYO Symphonic Orchestral Program Musicians
Perfect preparation or extension add-on course for students aged 14-19 (Years 9-12).
Ideal for those intending to, or who are currently studying Music 2* and/or Music Extension.
The program focuses on:
- Rhythmic and melodic dictation
- Sight-singing
- Score analysis
- Works of composers such as Debussy, Messiaen and Schoenberg
- Composers’ influence on the Western art music aesthetic
*Music (1900-Present) focuses on essential general knowledge for the HSC Music 2 course.
