Welcome to SYO

Sydney Youth Orchestras is a community that connects the most talented young musicians with their peers. We are the leading provider of orchestral training in NSW, and the only program in Australia that supports young musicians all the way from their first year of playing through to a pre-professional career. Whether you’re five years old and just starting out, or in your final years of a music degree, there’s a place for you here.

Is SYO right for me?

SYO welcomes musicians aged 5 to 25, across every stage of development:

  • SYO Prep – beginner string players who are new to ensemble playing
  • SYO Strings – primary & high school aged string musicians developing ensemble skills
  • Symphonic Orchestral Program – high school aged strings, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians with ensemble experience
  • Pre-Professional – advanced high school and tertiary musicians preparing for a career in music

Not sure which of these is the best fit for you? Our Which Orchestra page breaks down the standard and age range for every orchestra.

How do I join?

  1. Check your orchestra. Use our Which Orchestra guide, and talk to your instrumental teacher if you’re unsure.
  2. Apply. Most of our orchestras require a video audition; our SYO Prep program does not.
  3. Get your results. Audition outcomes and enrolment forms for our 2027 program will be sent by email in December 2026.

Cost varies by program, and scholarships are available for musicians facing financial or geographical barriers. See our Participation Fees and Scholarships pages for details.
