 How do I apply?

All current (2026) SYO musicians should apply using the personalised audition application link emailed to you once applications open to receive your $10 member discount. If you need this link resent, please email [email protected].

Why do I need to audition again?

Like all state-based youth orchestras in Australia, SYO auditions every musician each year, including returning members. Because individual musicians progress at different rates, auditioning each year ensures placements reflect your current playing ability. It also means we’re assessing new and returning musicians together, keeping standards high and placements fair for everyone.

Which orchestra should I apply for?

Each year we encourage returning musicians to audition for the next level orchestra, as this is an excellent opportunity to test yourself and build this important skill. The audition panel will consider you for all eligible orchestras and you may receive an offer for a different ensemble to your first preference. It is common for musicians to spend at least two years in an orchestra before moving up. Being offered the same orchestra again does not reflect a lack of progress, it simply reflects where your playing sits alongside this year’s applicants and where the audition panel feels you will have the most opportunity to develop as a musician.
