AMEB Grade 6 to AMusA or equivalent.
Previous large ensemble experience required. Must be having private instrumental tuition.
Recommended ages: 14 – 18 years old
All musicians are required to bring their OWN instruments (excluding large percussion instruments)

Meet our 2025 Conductor Leonard Weiss

Leonard Weiss is an Australian conductor and educator, currently the 2024 Cybec Assistant Conductor Fellow with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His career highlights include being the 2022 New Zealand Assistant Conductor in Residence and the 2020-21 BSO-Peabody Fellow with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Internationally, Leonard has been recognized for his participation in the Tanglewood Conducting Seminar led by Andris Nelsons and Riccardo Muti’s Italian Opera Academy, where he conducted Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera in Tokyo. This year, he also completed the Mr and Mrs Gerald Frank New Churchill Fellowship, traveling across Europe and the USA to observe and assist leading conductors, including at the prestigious Salzburg Festival.
In 2023, Leonard returned to National Opera to conduct Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and led the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Celebrate Christmas performances. As part of the 2023-24 Australian Conducting Academy, he is working with the Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, alongside esteemed mentors such as Mark Wigglesworth and Asher Fisch. A graduate of previous Australian Conducting Academies, Leonard has also conducted major orchestras across Australia and New Zealand, earning acclaim for his artistry and dedication to the craft.
