Kate Morgan

Kate grew up in London in a musical family and began playing the cello at age four.

She was fortunate to be involved in the vibrant music scene of the time, including the Inner London Youth Music programme in which she participated in orchestras, chamber music and master classes, whilst learning with renowned soloist and teacher, the late Christopher Bunting.
Involvement in Pro Corda, a wonderful chamber music organisation for the development of talented young string players also led to a performance in the Albert Hall for the first ever Youth Prom at the age of nine.

After moving to Australia Kate continued her studies with revered teacher James Whitehead and on his retirement, John Kennedy. It was also at this time that her interest in Historic Performance began.

Surprisingly, her first professional engagement was on her second instrument, the bassoon at age 17, this was closely followed by her long-standing relationship and love of Opera.

Kate has performed in at least 90 different Operas with S.A Opera and the Australian Opera Orchestra, including continuo cellist in the wonderful productions of Julius Caesar, Poppea, and Alcina. A small selection of the conductors she has worked with includes Simone Young, Christopher Hogwood, Richard Hickox, Richard Bonynge, Sir Charles Mackerras, Carlo Felice Cillario, Jane Glover, Harry Bicket, Stuart Challender, John Lanchberry, and Carlo Rizzi.

Kate has performed with the Orchestra of the Golden Age (Manchester), The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Orchestra of London, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Chamber Choir, the Song Company, the Sydney Philharmonia, Musica da Camera, Concertato, Adelaide Baroque and as guest principal with the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company and the Royal Ballet Covent Garden.

Her historical performance has also led to involvement in the Sydney, Adelaide and Fringe, Barossa, Huntingdon and Melbourne Early Music Festivals, in ensembles and as soloist.

Kate has performed and recorded with many and varied popular artists, including Rod Stewart, Sammy Davis Junior, Jerry Lewis, Julio Iglesias, Gurrumul, Engelbert Humperdink, Dionne Warwick, John Denver, Aled Jones, Danielle Spencer, Grinspoon, Jimmy Little, Natalie Imbruglia, You am I, Delta Goodrem, Paul Mac, Leonardo’s Bride, Kate Miller Heidke to name but a few.

Kate now enjoys focusing on passing her passion for music onto our next generation of future young musicians.

Sydney Youth Orchestras acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which we work, rehearse, gather and perform; the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. We pay our respect to Elders past and present, the original storytellers of these lands where we learn and create music today. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and honour the continuation of the oldest music practice in the world.

Always Was, Always Will Be.
