Demeil Anokin David

My name is Demeil Anokin David. I am 16 years old and go to Sydney Grammar School. I play violin but I also play; piano, drums, percussion, and dabble in pipe organ whilst self teaching myself guitar (to extraordinarily little success). I joined the SYO community when I was in year 7, as part of the Western Sydney Youth Orchestra. Since then, I have felt nothing but inclusion and progress, not just with my orchestral experience but also with social skills and personal growth. I have been given so many opportunities thanks to SYO, such as being the MC of Live at Illumina 2025 and being a part of the Big Busk.

I cannot wait for my next challenge to be of assistance to the SYO, all those in my current orchestra (the Peter Seymour Orchestra), and the new friends I am yet to meet. I feel a great sense of responsibility and honour in my role on the council and pledge to address all concerns of the talented musicians that are a part of SYO’s amazing program, whether you have been here for under a year, over a decade, or are wishing to join (which I highly recommend). To the other council members, I know that we can carry out all tasks to the best of our ability demonstrating patience and intelligence, no matter the difficulty. Unlike my guitar skills, I hope that we will make great progress with nothing but success. I am honoured to be working with such a friendly, respectful, and smart group of people and I for one will work my hardest to make positive changes for the satisfaction of all.

Sydney Youth Orchestras acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which we work, rehearse, gather and perform; the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. We pay our respect to Elders past and present, the original storytellers of these lands where we learn and create music today. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and honour the continuation of the oldest music practice in the world.

Always Was, Always Will Be.
