Expression of Interest: Conductor - SYO Symphonic Wind Orchestra

Sydney Youth Orchestras is the leading orchestral training provider in NSW, with over 600 weekly members. We are seeking a new and aspirational conductor for the SYO Symphonic Wind Orchestra as part of the SYO Symphonic Orchestral Program.  

The Symphonic Wind Orchestra rehearses 1pm-4pm on Saturdays during NSW Public School terms at Santa Sabina College in Strathfield.  The position will commence in February 2026.

  • Conduct the Symphonic Wind Orchestra as part of the SYO Symphonic Orchestral Program including public events such as Showcase Concerts and The Big Busk 
  • In collaboration with the Head of Orchestral Training plan appropriate repertoire for the ensemble 
  • Prepare scores, tutorial notes and lead all rehearsals 
  • Attend SYO planning meetings and contribute to feedback and planning 
  • Attend and contribute to the SYO post-auditions placement meeting 
  • Attend auditions if required 
  • Contribute to the selection and collation of audition excerpts in consultation with the Head of Orchestral Training 
  • Create complimentary content for SYOnline, the SYO digital platform 
  • Attend tours across regional NSW when required 
  • University qualification in Music and/or Music Education 
  • Significant experience leading a group of musicians aged 12-25  
  • Experience in high-level classroom teaching or equivalent 
  • Experience as a private instrumental tutor 
  • Practical experience of playing an orchestral instrument to a high standard 
  • A current Working with Children Check
