Big Busk 2023 Press Release

The Big Busk in Back for 2023

Sydney Youth Orchestras (SYO) proudly announces the return of its highly anticipated annual event, Big Busk 2023, an electrifying celebration of music, community, and philanthropy. This year’s event promises to be bigger and more inspiring than ever before, uniting talented young musicians and passionate supporters for a day of captivating performances in support of young musicians.

Big Busk 2023 is set to take place on Thursday September 28th, at various locations across the Sydney CBD and via livestream. Bringing together SYO’s exceptional ensembles of young musicians, aged 6-24 years old, as they showcase their talents in an unforgettable open-air musical extravaganza, activating the city with the sounds of joy. From classical symphonies to modern compositions and pop hits, the event will feature a diverse range of musical genres, ensuring an enchanting experience for all ages. You can find performances across the CBD, including Pitt Street Mall, The QVB, Dixon Street Mall, Grosvenor Place and a performance at Parliament House.

Our SYO Western Sydney Orchestra will be warming up with an evening of Big Busk Parramatta on Tuesday September 26th at Parramatta Square from 6pm.

The heart of Big Busk 2023 lies in SYO’s commitment to supporting the future of music education. This year’s event aims to raise funds to further SYO’s mission of providing exceptional training and performance opportunities for young musicians.

SYO is a Not-for-Profit Charity and receives less than 7% in Government funding. To ensure that Orchestral Training remains accessible SYO is reaching out to the broader community for support so that we can keep doing what we do best.

The funds raised are essential for us to:

  • Purchase “endangered” instruments like Violas and Double Bass’s
  • Maintain our Instrument bank including orchestral percussion
  • Purchase sheet music
  • Maintain our Music Library as a community resource
  • Support business infrastructure and IT systems
  • Keep the SYO Van running and transporting instruments
  • Find a permanent home

Big Busk 2023 is not only a platform for SYO’s 15 Orchestras musical excellence but underscores SYO’s commitment to inclusivity, bringing together young musicians from diverse backgrounds to collaborate and share their passion for music.

Big Busk 2023 is a celebration of the power of music to inspire, unite, and create positive change in our community,” said Mia Patoulios,  CEO of Sydney Youth Orchestras. “We invite everyone to join us in person or online in supporting the future of music and witnessing the incredible talents of our young musicians.”

SYO extends its gratitude to the event sponsors, partners, and volunteers who make Big Busk 2023 possible. With their support, SYO continues to enrich the lives of young people and music enthusiasts across NSW.

For the very first time The Big Busk is heading to Adelaide, with musicians from the Adelaide Youth Orchestra (AdYO) also taking to the streets.
