Sydney Youth Chamber Ensemble
Umberto Clerici, Conductor
Join the Sydney Youth Chamber Ensemble (SYCE) for a unique and intimate experience at Home The Venue, Darling Harbour, as they take chamber music out of the concert hall and into the night club.Led by esteemed Sydney Symphony Orchestra Principal Cellist & Artistic Director of SYCE – Umberto Clerici, SYCE shakes it up with their second concert for 2019. Beginning with an exploration of the ‘Italian Sound’, Clerici programs a diverse series of works spanning three centuries of Italian masterpieces. From Giovanni Sollima’s emotive Hell 1 to Vivaldi’s baroque masterpiece for cello and orchestra and Ezio Bosso’s shimmering Sea Prayer, SYCE will showcase a trio of Italian composers with an intimate knowledge of their craft and sound.
After interval, the ensemble presents Shostakovich’s infamous 8th String Quartet orchestrated by Rudolf Barhsai for chamber orchestra. Publicly, Shostakovich claimed the original quartet was inspired by a visit to the ruins of Dresden in 1960, inscribing the score with a dedication “to the victims of fascism and the war”. Privately however, he saw the work as a personal elegy. In a venue more commonly reserved for DJs and dance parties this expressive, deeply personal work is given new life by some of Sydney’s most promising young musicians. Grab a drink and join us for the ride!
