SYO State is an outreach project that increases participation and engagement in orchestral music across New South Wales. This program focuses SYO’s outreach activity in the NSW Central West via our main orchestral hub in Dubbo and smaller bespoke residencies in the South East and Hunter regions. Through this program, we aim to identify and nurture talented young musicians across the state and establish stronger community engagement and relationships.
Our annual residency at Four Winds Bermagui provides educational experiences for local students through visits to local secondary schools, where young adults are ‘introduced’ to the orchestra, with a focus on explaining the instrumental groups and the formation of the ensemble. This residency also provides young accomplished local musicians on the South Coast the opportunity to engage with our touring ensemble; a chance to sit in, rehearse and perform under the baton of SYO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Alexander Briger. This program culminates in a spectacular open-air performance at The Sound Shell, ‘Natures Concert Hall’. In visiting and performing for Bermagui, SYO’s Four Winds Residency enriches the cultural landscape of the region.
Sydney Youth Orchestras has a long history of delivering activity across various parts of NSW. Since 2016, we have focused on the City of Dubbo and establishing the town as SYO’s hub for the Central West.
“Just wanted to thank you all at SYO very much for a fantastic weekend! The girls had an absolutely wonderful time, so full of inspiration and encouragement. It is particularly wonderful as we live remotely- 2hours west of Dubbo and for my girls they don’t get to play in any orchestras at all. Sarah has never even met another oboist( other than her teacher), Jess has never got to play with any other violins before, as she is the only violinist out here! Such a thrilling experience, with wonderful music and fabulous conductors/tutors. Thank you all so much. Hope you will continue to do rural workshops!
The Hunter Valley residency combines workshops with local schools and public concerts. In 2017 the SYO Philharmonic and conductor Brian Buggy spent three days in the Hunter Valley withing with local primary school students in a combination of play-along rehearsals, and tutorials, as well as performing a number of public concerts including Holst’s Jupiter in an open air evening concert.
Since 2015, SYO has worked to provide Regional NSW musicians with an opportunity to receive regular high-level orchestral training with our orchestras in Sydney. By building a tailored rehearsal schedule in consultation with the regional student, SYO endeavours to create access to high quality training with options including flexible attendance plans and adjusted contribution payments. If you live 200km or more away from Sydney you automatically qualify for a regional scholarship and are eligible for further scholarships. If you are interested in becoming an SYO Regional Member, contact us on 02 9251 2422 or at firstname.lastname@example.org and our orchestral management team will be in touch.
