Symphonic Wind Orchestra
The Symphonic Wind Orchestra (SWO) was established in 2005 and is an opportunity for over 70 young wind and brass musicians from across NSW to extend their skills. Under the baton of respected educator and conductor James Pensini, the Symphonic Wind Orchestra covers a diverse range of repertoire from popular 20th Century film scores and jazz standards through to core orchestral repertoire.
In 2018, SWO will rehearse and perform works from renowned composers including Grainger and Holst, alongside contemporary repertoire and pop classics. SWO is the perfect training and performance environment for young brass, woodwind and percussion players.
The Symphonic Wind Orchestra accepts applications from all wind, brass and percussion musicians, aged 12 years and over, approximately AMEB Grade 6 minimum standard or equivalent.

The Symphonic Wind Orchestra presents a number of public performances each year, including ANZAC Day, Mosman Music Society Concerts, Santa Fest Darling Harbour and the wonderful Meet the Orchestra concerts which allow musicians to share the experience of music with young children and their families. The orchestra also tours as part of the annual SYO State program to regional NSW.
TUTORIALS, SECTIONALS & MASTERCLASSES
Musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra tutor each section of the orchestra on a regular basis, an association which allows members exposure to the professional music industry. SYO also offers a number of masterclasses with local and international guest artists along with camps and music retreats which offer intensive learning opportunities.
