Orchestral Fundamentals Program
The Orchestral Fundamentals Program provides younger musicians with the opportunity to develop their instrumental technique and ensemble skills, equipping them to join the SYO’s Symphonic Orchestral Program. Our team of passionate and experienced conductors guide ensembles across four learning stages, playing music from, and inspired by, the classical canon. Find out more about the four learning stages below.
Auditions for the 2018 Orchestral Fundamentals Program open in July 2017 - to sign up for our Auditions mailing list please fill out an Expression of Interest form here. String musicians over the age of 6 years, with a playing ability of AMEB grade 1 and above are invited to audition and will then be placed in the ensemble best suited to their current skill level.
Students are also encouraged to enrol in the SYO Theory Program. Lessons occur in the hour before rehearsal sessions, and introduce participants to the principles of musicianship as they relate to the instrumental ensemble work they are undertaking in rehearsals.
REHEARSALS & TUTORIALS
Students attend weekly Saturday rehearsals at St Mary’s Cathedral College. In 2017, Stages 1 and 2 rehearse from 10am–12:30pm, and Stages 3 and 4 rehearse from 1pm–4pm. All ensembles also receive regular tutorials from professional musicians from Sydney’s leading arts organisations.
EVENTS & PERFORMANCES
Ensembles in the Orchestral Fundamentals Program perform in four Seasonal Showcase concerts each year, one towards the end of each term. These Showcases provide our young musicians the opportunity to perform in a variety of professional concert venues, and to share their music-making with friends and family.
ORCHESTRAL FUNDAMENTALS CAMP
In the first term of each year, Orchestral Fundamentals Program students attend a non-residential Camp. This weekend intensive allows students to bond as a group with their conductor and quickly advance their repertoire knowledge.
