Central West Orchestral Workshops

Sydney Youth Orchestras has a long history of delivering activity across various parts of NSW.  Since 2016, we have focused on the City of Dubbo and establishing the town as SYO’s hub for the Central West, with a 3 year initial commitment.

May Conductors Visit

May 20 10am-12pm 

Workshop Venue:  St Johns College – Dubbo 

Cost: Included in June weekend fee

About: This day intensive gives musicians for an opportunity for participants in the June weekend to get a head start on learning their music and enjoy some extra tuition from conductors James Pensini and John Ockwell. This is an optional addition to the June weekend. Please note, you can not only attend the May tuition day with out registering for the June weekend.

 

June Orchestral Workshops  and Performance

Saturday June 3  – 10am-4pm

Sunday June 4 – 10am-4pm

Cost: $50 per person

Workshop Venue: Dubbo Christian School 

Concert Venue: June 4, 2:00pm Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre: Adult $25 + booking fee/Concession $15 + booking fee 

About: Joining 120 peers over two days, musicians will be given the opportunity to play alongside musicians in the Peter Seymour Orchestra and the Symphonic Wind Orchestra. Join the Orchestras and participate in intensive small-group tutorials with the SYO Emerging Artists to prepare for a full scale performance at Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre.

Lunch, morning and afternoon tea is provided on both days.

SYO Central West Strings Camp
Monday 25 September – Wednesday 27 September 
A program designed specifically to nurture and train the future engines of the orchestral world – the string players. This three day Strings Camp will provide an intensive yet fun platform for Central West string musicians to hone their playing skills.  Culminating in a Wednesday afternoon concert, this program will cater for players of many ages and abilities, inspiring the beginner and challenging the more advanced player in equal degrees. Led by revered music educator John Ockwell, students can expect to work hard and achieve in an engaging and supportive environment. SYO looks forward to providing an immersive experience, with locally sourced and nutritious catering provided, and fully trained artistic and administrative staff to facilitate a safe and happy three days of learning. 
Cost:  $75.00 for the three day program per participant
 
Program at a glance:
  • Daily sessions from 10:00am – 2:00pm per day across two venues (Macquarie Regional Conservatorium and Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo).
  • Orchestral rehearsals (tutti), led by esteemed conductors and with support from SYO senior musicians as section mentors
  • Sectional tutorials led by SYO senior musicians.
  • All morning tea, lunches and afternoon tea supplied (SYO caters for students of varying dietary needs)
  • The program will culminate at an afternoon performance at 2:00pm on Wed 27 Sep, at St Brigid’s Catholic Church (post concert refreshments provided. Tickets available at the door). 
  • Providing a multi-stream learning experience, with places across two orchestras catering for students from
    • Ensemble #1:    Preliminary – Grade 4 (or equivalent); and
    • Ensemble #2:    Grade 5 AMEB (or equivalent) and above
  • Musicians are placed in the ensemble best suited to their playing standard and needs by SYO artistic staff. Placements will be communicated in the week prior to the program’s commencement.
