STRAUSS Excerpts from Der Rosenkavalier
Richard Gill’s death, whenever it happened, was always going to be considered ‘premature’ because he maintained that youthfulness in the forty years since he took to the podium as Sydney Youth Orchestras’ chief conductor. But now it has happened, leaving all of us grateful for any contact we may have had with his knowledge, his energy, and his relentless mission to convince the world (or at least the nearest government) of music’s uniquely transformative power.
We celebrate Richard’s Gill’s life with the music of Richard Strauss. He’s the firebrand composer who revolutionised the technical and expressive possibilities of the orchestra before the end of the 19th century in his tone-poems. Enamoured with the female voice, Der Rosenkavalier is famed for the beautiful music of the three female protagonists, leaving early-20th-century audiences in awe of the exquisite duet and trios within the opera. And at the end of his life, his beloved Germany in ruins after the second world war, he wrote some of the most devastatingly moving music ever composed, most especially the Four Last Songs.
Young children are welcome at Sydney Youth Orchestra concerts. For all performances, children two years of age or older must have a ticket (even if the accompanying adult intends to sit the child on his/her knees).
