Dr. Naomi Cooper graduated from a Bachelor of Music with distinction in 2011, followed by First Class Honours in 2012 and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Music) in 2017 specialising in choral conducting. Naomi works as a freelance choral conductor, vocalist, guitarist, music educator and academic. She currently conducts many primary, secondary, youth, university and community choirs including International Grammar School primary and secondary choirs, Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College’s auditioned choir, Mosman High School’s senior choir, The New Day Carers Choir, nationwide Estonian-Australian choir Kooskõlas and The Salisbury Hotel Community choir. As a chorister, Naomi has performed extensively with Sydney Philharmonia’s acclaimed youth ensemble, VOX including tours to Canberra, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as well as many performances with Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Naomi has conducted opera and musical theatre projects including the premiere of The Spidermaiden and the Runaway Plum Blossom for Blush Opera in 2017. Naomi works as a sessional academic at Macquarie University and Western Sydney University teaching choir, vocal studies, popular music studies and music analysis. Naomi’s expertise in the area of choral conducting has been recognised through publications in books, journals and conference proceedings. She has presented her research on community choirs both interstate (Hobart, Canberra, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney) and internationally (Singapore, Brazil, Japan and Scotland). Having trained as a classical guitarist, Naomi performs solo at public and private events. Naomi is passionate about music education, which has seen her develop large guitar programs and facilitate a range of workshops for children and adults.
