June Newsletter 2017

This month SYO have been focussing on our Opportunity Now campaign, which involves both our SYO State Program and Opportunity Scholarships. We have had two trips to Central West NSW, and held our new fundraising event Live at Level 28. Things are wrapping up for Term 2 with our Winter Showcase on June 17, which highlights all the hard work our ensembles have put into rehearsals this term. Best wishes from everyone here at SYO for a relaxing and recuperative school holidays.

Our first trip to Dubbo on May 20 was an opportunity for Central West musicians to participate in an intensive workshop with conductors John Ockwell and James Pensini in preparation for a weekend of playing in June with the Symphonic Wind Orchestra and the Peter Seymour Orchestra. Our June Central West tour began with performances in Parramatta at St Patricks Primary School and at Winmalee Public School, before 100 young musicians drove on to Dubbo, for a weekend of workshops with local musicians which culminated in a performance at Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre. The Symphonic Wind Orchestra performed in Forbes with the Forbes Town and District Band and the Peter Seymour Orchestra performed in Gilgandra with the Coo-ee choir. Registrations still open for Strings Intensive in the September school holidays HERE.

On Thursday 8 June we held our new fundraising event Live at Level 28 in support of our Opportunity Now campaign raising funds for outreach and scholarships. The night featured many of our senior musicians as soloists and in chamber groups, as well as our Stage 2 Strings Ensemble, Mozart. So far we have raised $36 300. You can help us reach our goal of $50 000 by donating HERE. Thank you to all our sponsors and partners on the night: Allens Linklaters, Dixon Advisory, Bijl Architecture, BackVintage Wines, Four Pillars, Tilba Cheese, Wonderlaind Desserts, Lindt, Sticky, and everyone who attended and donated.

We are sad to announce that Nick Munro, our Operations Manager, Symphonic Orchestral Program is leaving us at the end of the month. After finishing up on June 30 he will be moving to the UK to broaden my horizons and gain experience in the vibrant arts culture of London. We are so lucky to have had Nick working with us and we will miss him!
