The Sydney Youth Orchestra is the premier orchestral training provider in New South Wales and was founded as a single orchestra in 1973 by the visionary music educator and conductor, Peter Seymour. Over 44 years it has grown to become a community of over 500 young musicians, aged 6-24, from all over Sydney and beyond. We gather weekly for rehearsal in the city and now in Western Sydney, in thirteen different ensembles carefully constructed to match skill, age and experience. Our Orchestras. Together we inspire excellence, presenting public concerts and performing in major community events such as Carols in the Domain, energetic Toddlers’ Proms for very young children, and outreach programs including concerts and workshops in regional New South Wales. Hear Us Play. We celebrate and recognise the thousands of young musicians who have nurtured their love of orchestral music, learned important life skills, had formative experiences and made lifelong friends. Many of them have gone on to careers as professional musicians. They secure leading positions in all the major Australian orchestras and internationally. Indeed, Australia’s professional orchestras simply would not exist without this concentrated training, and Sydney Youth Orchestras is a place to learn the valuable practical skills, which transforms students into professionals. OUTSTANDING ARTISTIC STAFF
SYO conductors are experienced educators, inspiring their musicians in weekly rehearsals. They are drawn from the leading orchestral education programs across the sector, and foster strong connections with their orchestra members. Furthermore, a team of SYO tutors work with each orchestra several times each term, providing small group mentoring and specialist instrumental guidance. These tutors are drawn from professional ensembles such as the Sydney Symphony, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and freelance professionals. They get to know our young players, and our program goals, and develop wonderful mentoring relationships. Many are also alumni of the SYO program, and all bring dedication and enthusiasm to their work with our young musicians. Our Conductors.
